Timing belts (also known as cambelts)are a very important part of your engine, they are a service item and should be changed on mileage as well as age.

The service intervals of some cars are 36,000 miles or 3 years which ever is sooner, it is important to change on time as well even if very low mileage as the timing belts deteriorate over time.

When changing the timing belt it is also important to change the guide and tensioner pulleys as well as sometimes the water pump.

If the cambelt fails it can cause very expensive damage to your engine which can sometimes lead to the car being written off.
